Thank you Candy Chang!

Thank you, Candy Chang! After watching the documentary Urbanized, I was completely taken with Candy Chang and her public engagement methods.  On Earth Day, I used one of her techniques to gather feedback about a new space on Allen Street. The City of Waterloo is in the process of buying the St. Louis School and the parking lot.  The area sits right beside Mary Allen Park, in the middle of an incredibly active urban neighbourhood. The neighbourhood association has been actively lobbying for more green space. On April 22, the Mary Allen Neighbourhood held its annual park clean up.  At the event we made two posters to ask the community what they wanted. The first poster said  “I want …  in the St. Louis Building.” Some of the great ideas included a community centre, early years centre, and an artist live work space. The second poster said “I want… in the St. Louis Parking Lot.” Some of the great ideas included a splash pad, shade, tennis court, trees, and a herbal garden. Thanks to Mary Allen for their great ideas!  The innovative ideas and thoughts will go to the General Manager of the Community, Culture and Recreation...

January 2012- Lowdown on Uptown

Happy New Year Waterloo! It was lovely meeting so many great people at this years Mayor and Council Levee at RIM Park last Sunday.  I have included some pictures from the event. New Year means new goals.  I want to hear your thoughts on Waterloo and how we can make it better!  My priorities in 2012 include Economic Development in the core, working to enhance traffic calming and safety for Uptown residents, and continue to engage and communicate with taxpayers, working to keep you informed. Waterloo is experiencing an incredible amount of growth, especially in the Uptown.   Over the next year, I will be working with Neighbourhood Associations and Waterloo staff on Your Neighbourhood 2030.   It will be a chance to discuss what you want to see happen over the next 20 years in your backyard. We will look at services, greeenspaces, recreation facilities, traffic concerns, and zoning questions, all specific to each neighbourhood.   Mary Allen will be the first at the beginning of February.   My goal is to work with the Heritage District in the Spring, and Uptown West in the Fall.   We are currently looking for community leaders in Westmount that might be interested in starting a Neighbourhood Association, if you are interested I would love to help facilitate. I look forward to an innovative and exciting 2012 as your local representative!  Tell me what your priorities are for Waterloo. Send me an email. For the rest of the enewsletter click...
